A pathologist is a doctor who has gone to medical school to practice the diagnosis of diseases at the microscope. Anything that is taken from a body, i.e. breast tissue, a piece of lung, a mole is sent to a pathologist to determine if it is cancerous or not, or if there is an infection or other process. A dermatopathologist is a specialist in diagnosing skin biopsies under the microscope.Dr. Agarwal-Antal has had training in general pathology from Johns Hopkins Hospital and specialized subspecialty training in dermatopathology under A. Bernard Ackerman, MD. A dermatopathologist is an expert in the microscopic diagnosis of diseases of the skin, including infectious, immunologic, degenerative, and neoplastic diseases. This entails the examination and interpretation of specially prepared tissue sections, cellular scrapings, and smears of skin lesions by means of light microscopy, electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy.
